Tuesday 2nd October – canoe ***** hot and sunny :) happy bunny again!!!

Another gorgeous sun rise and another glorious day :) at our spot by Sigean Etang at Port Mahon. After outdoor exercises and breakfast we set off in the canoe to explore the Sigean/Bages etang. The flock of flamingos were over towards Port Nouvelle so we started off going over there to see how close we could get before they flew off – not very is the answer to that! They are amazing when they fly and it was a real sight to see them all take off at the same time :) Carried on round the point at Les Cabanes where there were a few summer houses with various sailing equipment but they are mainly for fishing I think. We then turned around and paddled over to the Ile de l’Aute which meant passing the van but we were in the middle of the etang at the time. Basically the etang is really shallow all over but it does get deep in the middle and the wind had picked up a little bit making it a bit choppy. We were quite surprised how well we managed and it didn’t seem to take us long to get to the island. We past a really beautiful house with blue shutters, which appears to be the only house on the island. We pulled the canoe up near the jetty and there was a path up the hill not very far away so we had a climb up there and looked at the view :) Lunch then we sorted through thousands of miniscule shells and collected our favourites :) Read for a while then set off again and as the wind had dropped completely and the surface was flat calm we decided to canoe round the island which was a lot bigger than we thought! We had to go over several floating fishing nets which the local fishermen attach to wooden posts sunk into the etang but the canoe went over them easily. There is a spit of land which nearly joins up with the bank near the railway line and the only place to cross was piled high with weed so we had to walk over that and it was very smelly! As we came out into the main etang again the wind had completely changed direction and chopped the surface up again and we even had proper waves in the middle! Again we managed really well and got back to the van about 6 meaning we had been out 7 hours – 5 of those were solid paddling. I am amazed we are not more tired – must be getting used to it :) It was a cracking day and as we had so much pasta left from last night we didn’t have to fuss over tea. Mag thrashed me at Phase 10 – making one back on her double loss last night! Score 8-7 to me and 2 draws!
